ADVANCE: Empowering First-Generation Law Students at WCL ADVANCE is WCL’s only mentorship program geared toward the retention of first-generation law students. We define “first-generation” as students who are the first in their immediate family to graduate high school, university, or attend law school in the United States. Created and run by peer, we seek to support and elevate the academic and professional success of first-generation law students. Recognizing the unique challenges these students often encounter, ADVANCE provides structured guidance and mentorship to help them confidently navigate law school and the legal profession.   Core Goals of ADVANCE: Improve academic performance through skill-building and mentorship. Transform faculty into key allies by encouraging meaningful student-professor engagement. Support students throughout the job application process with targeted resources and advice. Promote effective time management and a balanced, healthy approach to law school. Help students fully leverage WCL resources to maximize their law school experience.   ADVANCE is more than mentorship, it’s a commitment to equity, empowerment, and building a strong foundation for long-term success in the legal field.  Note: While our mission is to support students who are the first in their immediate family to go to law school, we seek to support all peers. Participation in this ADVANCE is open to all members of the AUWCL community, regardless of background. Our events, programs, and activities are inclusive and do not restrict participation based on personal identity or characteristics, including but not limited to race, color, national origin (or shared ancestry), religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.
