American University’s Advocates for Underrepresented People in Law endeavors to promote and represent any AU student interested in the legal profession. AUPL’S main purpose is to build a community uniting all individuals, which will be cultivated through the emphasis of inclusivity. Various social events and gatherings will serve to further develop the organization, available for all AU students considering the legal field. AUPL events will be centered around networking with other AU students, practicing attorneys and current law students. Through a panel discussion composed of guest speakers from diverse backgrounds, attorneys and law students will share their journey. AUPL strives to educate itself and its members on the unique challenges the guest speakers have faced, and how they have overcome said challenges. Through their guidance, club members will be inspired and further educated on the legal profession. Our organization additionally intends to host workshops that center on job searching, for example, researching fellowships and internships. A direct emphasis will be placed on job openings that urge marginalized individuals and their allies to apply. The Executive Board will act as an advisor to club members, advising during the stages of the application process, to further build their credentials. While the work of AUPL centers the experiences of marginalized groups and communities, including individuals of minority backgrounds, the LBTQ+ community, those of various religions or beliefs, gender identity, individuals with disabilities, and all socioeconomic statuses, AUPL is open to all students interested in our mission. Let it be known that the organization is accessible to all students at American University, as every student is encouraged to join and further advocate for equality. Ultimately, AUPL aspires to draw awareness of the current inequalities faced by underrepresented individuals in the current legal world, effectively addressing disparities and providing representation for students.
