The Howard University Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, National Service Fraternity, Inc., proudly stands as the Zeta Phi Chapter, chartered on May 29th, 1948, and honored as the “Black Beta” for its rich legacy and enduring impact. Chartered by visionary brothers including Lucius E. Young, the first black National President of Alpha Phi Omega, and Armour Jenning Blackburn, Lewis King Downing, and Russell A. Dixon—whose names grace buildings on Howard’s campus—Zeta Phi is rooted in a legacy of excellence. Reverend Dr. Bernard L. Richardson, a revered figure at Howard, is also an Honorary Member of the Fraternity. As one of the most distinguished chapters in Alpha Phi Omega’s history, Zeta Phi exemplifies a resilient brotherhood dedicated to servant leadership. We believe true leadership begins with service and, through intentional action, we uplift communities, strengthen bonds, and carry forward the legacy of those who paved the way.
