Chronic Health Advocates is a health advocacy organization that aims to (1) educate our community on issues regarding rare and chronic illnesses and disabilities, (2) promote awareness across George Washington University on rare and chronic illnesses, (3) provide a space for both allies and patients to discuss various topics relevant to the rare and chronic illness community. 6 in 10 Americans are living with a rare or chronic illness and there are approximately 7,000 rare diseases with more being discovered every day. Patients diagnosed with rare or chronic illnesses may experience a number of issues like stigma, misdiagnoses, mental health, and many others. Many patients feel isolated and face unique obstacles when living day-to-day with a chronic illness. Thus, the mission of Chronic Health Advocates is to provide a space for both students and allies to discuss issues relevant to the rare disease and chronic illness community   We are an official Students for Rare Chapter of the National Organization for Rare Disorders and will frequently host events alongside NORD as well as other rare disease advocacy organizations.   If you don’t know much about the rare disease and chronic illness community, don’t worry! We’re completely open to membership from the most experienced student advocate to students who seek to learn more about our community.
