Data Science Minor description from BC website: "The Data Science Minor at Boston College is an interdisciplinary program emphasizing human-centered applications of data analysis and modeling for the common good. The minor has been designed to be flexible and accessible for students across a variety of disciplines; no previous programming experience is required, and students will be able to construct a 6-course pathway that connects data science to their application area of interest. The minor is open to all undergraduate students at Boston College." This minor has been available to BC students since 2023, and this timing could not have been more perfect. The field of data science has witnessed significant advancements in recent years, and we aim to provide students with even more support in pursuing their interests in this field. This club would be distinctive in that it would be directly related to our new data science minor. We can collaborate with faculty and generate interest through classes. While clubs within CSOM and the CS department have certain overlaps with the field of data science, no clubs are so directly associated with this new program. This presents a clear opportunity for students interested in data science to further develop their skills. We plan to take a hold of this opportunity by: - Hosting hack-a-thons - ways to demonstrate coding and data analysis skills (distinct from the CS hack-a-thons, having a clear focus in data) - Inviting guest speakers - BC has a wealth of professionals in fields like data science, machine learning, and quantitative analysis - Sending out newsletters - included within would be networking and interview tips, as well as job postings Our first few events would be centered around club introductions, as well as guest panels/speakers. We are excited about this opportunity and would love to clarify any outstanding questions!
