The Dr. Katherine Y. Brown Leadership Academy (KYB Leadership Academy), founded on June 14th, 2016 in Nashville, Tennessee, is a transformative leadership program committed to cultivating global leaders and raising awareness of pulmonary hypertension. Established by Dr. Katherine Y. Brown in honor of her mother, the academy began with a small inaugural cohort of seven scholars and has since grown into a dynamic, international movement. With a mission to equip students and young professionals with critical leadership skills and a vision of building confident, service-driven leaders worldwide, KYB offers a hands-on, project-based curriculum rooted in its four core modules—Health, Leadership, Government, and Finance. These pillars are designed to provide participants with practical competencies that prepare them for leadership in every sector of society. Each summer, KYB extends its mission through immersive programs that engage justice-impacted youth, providing them with mentorship, advocacy training, and opportunities to develop leadership skills that directly impact their communities. Scholars also participate in service initiatives, public speaking development, and cultural immersion experiences that extend beyond the classroom. KYB’s global footprint continues to expand, with cohorts traveling to Colombia, South Africa, the Turks & Caicos Islands, and most recently Trinidad and Tobago, where the 30th cohort in 2024 trained more than 1,000 students through conferences, service projects, and empowerment sessions. Through its fellowships, community-based projects, and international leadership initiatives, the KYB Leadership Academy remains dedicated to developing leaders who are not only prepared to succeed personally but also to transform their communities and the world. Now recognized as an official student organization at Howard University, the KYB Leadership Academy is proud to continue this legacy on campus by empowering Bison scholars to lead with purpose, serve their communities, and carry forward the academy’s mission of global impact.
