The English Graduate Student Association (EGSA) is both a professional and a social organization of graduate students in or affiliated with The George Washington University Department of English. Abiding by university policy, EGSA represents graduate interests on department faculty committees and, more generally, provides graduate students with a collective voice in departmental affairs. Additionally, EGSA works with graduate students from other departments in sponsoring and coordinating interdisciplinary activities for the professional development of its members. EGSA also sponsors various social activities that foster a sense of community for its members, while also providing newer students with access to students further along in the program who can serve as mentors. To this end, EGSA pursues three directives: 1) To expand participation of English graduate students in campus governance and to lobby effectively for graduate student concerns with the Department of English and the University; 2) To encourage and facilitate graduate students' academic and professional efforts; 3) To foster collegiality and fellowship among English graduate students with each other as well as with other departments in the Columbian College of Arts and Sciences (CCAS), including but not limited to graduate students, faculty, and staff.
