American University
History The American University Gospel Choir has existed on the AU campus for more than three decades. In 1976, Valerie Yarborough and students Linda Jackson, Sheryl Taylor, Steven Wright, and Star Jones had a burning desire to sing gospel music and ring out shouts of praise. Under the spiritual guidance and advising of Rev. Clarence Cross, the choir quickly began to grow with students from various ethnic and religious backgrounds. Gospel spring revivals were organized and brought in preachers from all across the eastern seaboard. At these revivals, choirs from all over the city came and gave witness to the old time gospel songs and revival styles. The choir’s theme is derived from Psalms 150: 6 — “Let everything that hath breath praise ye the Lord…”. We ask all to pray that we continue to uplift the name of the Lord to all who will listen. Motto Gospel means good news. Our commitment to the gospel of Jesus brings joy, positivity, and strength to our community.
