In the year 1985, an organization was born to unite freshmen women living in the Harriet Tubman Quadrangle for the purpose of making a successful transition into college life at Howard University. That organization is Ladies of the Quad Social Club. Ladies of the Quad Social Club introduces impressionable freshmen women to upperclassmen women who have learned the skills and characteristics necessary to excel at the university. These upperclassmen women are compelled to pass on those lessons to the campus’ newcomers. Although initially conceived only for residents of the Tubman Quadrangle (the university’s only freshmen women’s dormitory complex at the time),Ladies of the Quad Social Club’s membership consists of women who resided in other freshmen dormitories who have chosen this organization as a conduit for growth and enrichment during their time at the Mecca. The organization has sustained itself over the years by choosing dynamic, intelligent, and dedicated young women to become apart of its ranks Ladies of the Quad Social Club promotes sisterhood among freshmen women, encourages scholarship among its members, provides invaluable services to Howard University and its surrounding community, and projects a positive image of the African-American woman. It is a unique organization in that it provides freshmen women with an opportunity to develop and enhance skills for leadership and service and serves as a networking organization for all of its membership, off and on-campus. The bonds of true friendship and the lasting impression it leaves on its members and the University community is a testament to Howard University’s commitment to the values of leadership, excellence, truth, and service.
