The Boston College Mock Trial program competes under the umbrella of AMTA, the American Mock Trial Association (www.collegemocktrial.org). Through engaging in trial simulations in competition with teams from other institutions, students develop critical thinking and public speaking skills, as well as a knowledge of legal practices and procedures. AMTA sponsors regional and national-level competitions, as well as providing interesting and complex case materials for academic use. Students travel the country to compete, building close friendships and real-world skills along the way. Boston College has a history of competing at high-level tournaments, recently winning 10th at nationals. Our program is currently ranked 31st in the country. Each year, we receive a case from AMTA, and write out materials to simulate trial. Case materials range from reality TV to 1st degree murder! To prepare for trial, students develop legal theory, public speaking, and communication skills. Our program consists of 4 distinct teams, and ranks among the best in the country. You may participate as a witness or attorney. Our witnesses think quickly on their feet. They develop fun characters and interact with judges and attorneys. Students who enjoy theatre or performing arts especially are encouraged to apply. The attorneys will give statements, direct/cross examine witnesses, and argue objections. No experience necessary! Team captains and coaches help you develop argumentation and critical thinking skills within our program. The position is excellent for pre-law, political science, philosophy, and similar majors.
