The National Action Network (NAN) is one of the nation’s leading civil rights organizations, with chapters across the United States. Founded in 1991 by Reverend Al Sharpton, NAN continues the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. by promoting a modern civil rights agenda that champions justice, equity, and dignity for all. NAN is committed to ensuring one standard of justice, decency, and equal opportunity for all people—regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, citizenship, criminal record, economic status, gender, gender expression, or sexuality. Through community organizing, public policy actions, and direct action, NAN enables Howard University students to utilize their education in influential ways that promote equity and justice.
