About Phi Lambda Sigma Pharmacy Leadership Society The purpose of Phi Lambda Sigma, also known as the national Pharmacy Leadership Society, is to promote the development of leadership qualities, especially among pharmacy students. By peer recognition, the Society encourages participation in all pharmacy activities. Since membership crosses fraternal and organizational lines, the Society does not compete with other pharmacy organizations.Phi Lambda Sigma honors leadership. Members are selected by peer recognition. No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by one’s peers. Such recognition instills and enhances self-confidence, encourages the less active student to a more active role and promotes greater effort toward the advancement of pharmacy. The History of the Beta Rho Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma Phi Lambda Sigma was organized in March 1965 through the creative imagination of then student Charlie Thomas on the campus of Auburn University, with the approval of the faculty of the School of Pharmacy. Following a two-year probationary period, the Auburn University Student Senate granted a charter to the Society on October 3, 1967. The Phi Lambda Sigma National Fraternity was legally incorporated in Lee County, Alabama on June 28, 1968. In 2000, student Lolita White became interested in finding a way to honor Howard University pharmacy students for leadership much like the academic distinction given to students in Rho Chi Honors Society. White approached Assistant Professors Anthony Wutoh and Frederic Lombardo for help with bringing Phi Lambda Sigma to then Howard University School of Pharmacy. She would team up with student Nadina Powell, who would become instrumental in carrying on this endeavor after White graduated in 2000. In 2001, Powell, Dr. Wutoh, and Dr. Cynthia Warrick would sign a petition for charter on behalf of Howard University. Phi Lambda Sigma Executive Director Dr. Mary Euler acknowledged the petition and agreed to bring the charter with her to the chartering induction. On April 27th, 2001 at B Smith’s Restaurant in Union Station, the Beta Rho Chapter of Phi Lambda Sigma was chartered inducting 13 members, 9 students and 4 faculties. Since coming to Howard University, Phi Lambda Sigma has identified leaders who go onto continue their influence into their careers including current faculty Dr. Bwayo Weaver and Dr. Maritsa Serlemitsos-Day, Dr. Pamela Allen, a key member of the pharmacy school alumni chapter, Dr. Eric Patrick, the first Beta Rho Alumni to secure a position as a Phi Lambda Sigma national officer, and the alumni members who secure residencies including more than half the 2006 induction class. To continue to maintain the standard by which potential Phi Lambda Sigma candidates are considered, an interview process was implemented in 2012. No greater honor can be bestowed upon an individual than to be recognized as a leader by one’s peers.
