Plant club is a welcoming and encouraging environment for people with all levels of plant knowledge – from limited to masterful. We have weekly meetings in which members can bring their plants for discussion, checkup, questions, concerns, or creative growing ideas. A few times throughout each month, we will host specialty workshops. Possibilities include, but are not limited to: kitchen garden projects, propagation workshop, Bonsai and traditional Japanese plant growing techniques, terrarium workshops, diy sustainable container/pots workshop (using collected recycled materials), species identification walks, foraging walks, tours of local sustainable farms, a trip to the Arnold Arboretum, and revitalization and upkeep of the Connolly House greenhouse. Each meeting has a designated time for "cutting swaps" with interested members. Members have the potential to root samples of many different plant species and swap samples with other plant members. For instance, if I had ten Muehlenbeckia axillaris I may want to swap one with a student who has a novel plant species which I do not yet have: Ficus pumila 'Quercifolia.’ In this way, members without certain plant experience can gain knowledge through “adopting” propagated plant stock from other club members and can learn growing tips and techniques from other members.
