The Puerto Rican Student Association would have as its main goal to promote the rich culture and traditions of the Puerto Rican community on campus. We would like to serve as a meeting point for Puerto Rican students that come to Boston College with similar background experiences, and to foster those relationships between students of different classes that can serve as mentors throughout their Boston College experience. We hope to build a sense of community between Puerto Rican students, so that they can find a sense of belonging even while being far away from home. The organization can serve as a place where students of Puerto Rican heritage and roots engage in dialogue about their own experiences as a way to strengthen their own Puerto Rican identity. At the same time, the organization would allow us to lift up the rich traditions, music, and food of Puerto Rico, so that not only our members but the larger student body can gain a better understanding of Puerto Rican culture. The organization can also help us to forge stronger connections with an extensive Puerto Rican alumni network that could also help our members better navigate the emotional and cultural changes that arise when coming to study in the United States. These connections can also allow us to bring distinguished Puerto Rican alumni to speak to our members as a way to demonstrate what is possible for us as a minority group on campus and in the US. Furthermore, having an organization that represents Puerto Rican students can also help us to promote the knowledge of social, cultural, political, and educational issues that affect the Puerto Rican community. The organization can help us to bring visibility to social issues that affect the Puerto Rican diaspora, and through the club create fundraising or educational events and opportunities that can in some way help us give back to our island.
