The purpose of SHOfA is to provide an abundance of resources to BIPOC (black, indigenous, or persons of color), first-generation, and other underrepresented students enrolled or interested in a Pre-Health or STEM track. Throughout our time at BC, we have witnessed many underrepresented students drop out of their Pre-Health or STEM tracks because they did not feel properly supported, prepared, or lacked the confidence to excel in their courses. We know it can be difficult to balance the challenges of being an underrepresented student while completing all the necessary tasks to succeed in challenging STEM courses, and we want to address this head-on. Components of SHOfA include peer and alumni mentoring programs, tutoring programs, motivational workshops, Pre-Health seminars, and community building amongst faculty, alumni, and students. Our goal is that these additional resources will provide students with adequate support and confidence they need to overcome challenges within the STEM and Healthcare community and encourage diversity within these fields. In order to fully embody the Jesuit motto of Boston College to "be men and women for others," the BC community must have plentiful resources for students to encourage one another and themselves to be successful and serve others in their professional STEM and/or Health careers.
