Step in Line
Boston College
Step in Line is a line dancing club. Line dancing is a group dance where people are aligned in rows and perform the same choreographed steps together. It is usually danced to country or popular music, making it appealing to all. A famous example of line dancing includes Cotton Eye Joe and the dance scene in Footloose. Step in Line seeks to provide students with a joyful, creative, and inclusive space that enriches campus life and fosters community. Our club will be structured around weekly lessons open to all students, regardless of prior experience, making line dancing accessible to anyone interested in trying something new. Lessons will be structured with ice breakers and bonding activities to start, followed by instruction of dances to various songs. Each meeting will last approximately an hour to an hour and a half. In addition to lessons, we want to host social dance nights on campus and organize occasional outings to local line dancing venues in the city. Through these experiences, the club will give students a consistent outlet for physical activity, stress relief, and friendship. This organization fills a unique space at Boston College. While there are established dance groups, no current organization is devoted to line dancing. Unlike performance-based teams, our club emphasizes participation, learning, and connection over competition or skill. In this way, the club complements, rather than duplicates, existing student organizations while offering a new cultural and social experience. The mission of Step in Line aligns closely with Boston College’s Jesuit values, particularly Cura Personalis. Our mission is to engage students in a creative, collaborative, and accessible physical outlet in harmony with a welcoming community. Our vision is to create a space where students can form lasting friendships, discover new interests, and share in the joy of dance. In doing so, we embody the Jesuit commitment to building community and supporting the holistic development of every student. Our goals reflect this mission. In our first year, we aim to establish a base of at least fifteen active members across multiple class years, ensuring sustainability and leadership continuity. We plan to grow awareness and appreciation for line dancing at Boston College. In the future, we plan to host collaborative events with other dance or cultural organizations and eventually put on a campus-wide dance or formal. Step in Line is designed for sustainability. Founded by passionate sophomores, with interest from students in multiple grade levels, the organization will have a strong foundation to grow the community and create a successful base for Step in Line for years to come. Step in Line will require minimal resources. The main resource we will need is a room with a projector and space to dance for our line dancing lessons. We will require no funding as there are no additional resources needed to run this club. It is both feasible and low-cost for the University to support. Line dancing is beginner-friendly and safe, requiring no specialized equipment or risk management beyond what the University already provides for student organizations. In short, Step in Line will enhance the student experience by offering an inclusive and formative community centered on dance, joy, and connection. It fills a gap among current organizations, aligns directly with Jesuit values, and has clear goals for the future. We believe this club will become a vibrant part of Boston College’s student life and look forward to the opportunity to share the joy of line dancing with the campus community.
