Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) was founded on September 11, 1960, by William F. Buckley Jr. in his childhood home in Sharon, Connecticut. The signing of the Sharon Statement, which, in 400 words, is described as the seminal document in the establishment of the modern conservative movement. During the 1960s and 1970s, YAF was instrumental in the campaigns for Goldwater and Reagan’s bid for the Republican nomination for the presidency, where the latter served as YAF’s honorary chairman from 1965 until his passing in 2004. Since its founding, YAF has been responsible for the creation of many influential political groups, from ACU, CPAC, and the National Journalism Center. YAF at GWU was founded in 2006 by Sergio Gor, and we continue to strive to be the intellectual hub for conservatism on campus. We welcome any ideas that people may hold and encourage them to share and develop them through productive collaboration and conversation with their peers. We are also active in campus culture and events. We are most well-known for hosting guest speakers such as Steve Forbes, Michael Knowles, Ben Shapiro, Senator Rand Paul, and many more on campus. In addition, we also hold panels and debates for students to discuss and share their beliefs in an intellectual setting. Every semester, we hold numerous retreats and conferences locally and nationally for GW students to attend, where they can hear and meet some of the most influential voices in American politics. We create a community to meet new friends, get involved, hear speakers, and share ideas that are united by values, not party politics. Young Americans for Freedom is part of the larger Young America’s Foundation. It is a 501(c)(3) Non-Profit organization and does not endorse or participate in any political campaigns.
